Keynote Address – Darshan and Distribution: Popular Art in South India

Since the Beginning of the 20th century, the most widespread and influential forms of art in India have been printed pictures that circulate as framed prints, calendars, magazine illustrations, package labels and cinema posters. It is now possible to describe the development of this industry, the artists who created the paintings, and the trends and fashions, both in India and abroad, that have driven this critical form of expression and communication. Whether destined for the puja room or the bazaar, early prints that have survived have become key documents in tracing the recent history of the Indian nation.
