Event Details

This year the University of Calgary is helping to celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of its partners in internationalization, the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. One event being held to commemorate this important milestone is an on-campus film festival, generously being sponsored by the University of Calgary’s Asian Studies Group. The festival will run from October 2008 to March 2009 and will feature films exploring contemporary issues in India. . Our next film is a documentary about the destructiveness of the modern fishing industry in India:

Traditional fishing communities around the world are under threat of mass displacement by the industrial fishing practices of gigantic factory ships. Private capital, with the aid of international lending agencies, has embarked on a mindless offensive to catch fish in quantities unheard of until now. The primary victims of this approach are poverty-stricken rice growers and fishing communities. Salination of ground water causes a scarcity of fresh drinking water as waste from prawn farms are emptied into nearby rivers and other fresh water bodies. Fishing in the Sea of Greed documents the response of one fishing community in India to the “rape and run” industries that have begun to dominate their livelihood and decimate their environment.

There will be no admission fee.

We invite students and faculty at the University and members of the Calgary community to join us to learn about India and the programs available through the Shastri Institute. Upcoming film showings include: Nalini by Day, Nancy by Night, A Darker Side of Fair, and Diverted to Delhi.
