Lal Bahadur Shastri Student Prize (CLOSED)

The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute is seeking applications for the best student papers on India in Canada. Entries are invited on any topic with specific relevance to India including economics, environment, history, law, literature, politics, philosophy, social studies, humanities, science or women’s studies. Submissions from graduate and undergraduate students are welcome. This year we will be conducting a separate competition for French submissions. We will be awarding three prizes:

  • Best Undergraduate Paper
  • Best Graduate Paper
  • Best French Paper

Value:

$500.00 each

Eligibility:

  1. Students must be currently registered, enrolled and active in undergraduate or graduate degree studies at a Canadian institution that is a member of the Shastri Institute
  2. Students must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents
  3. Eligible papers/essays must have been written in the past two to three years (They do not have to be submitted for a course or graded)
  4. Eligible papers adhere to the following specifications:
    • Maximum 6,000 words for graduate essays
    • Maximum 4,500 words for undergraduate essays
    • Double spaced
    • 12 point font (Times New Roman or Arial)
    • MS Word documents or PDF files (preferred)
    • Instructors may assist applicants in revising their papers for submission

Please note that an individual who was previously awarded the Lal Bahadur Shastri Prize will not be eligible to apply again

Application Requirements:

  • One electronic copy of the paper/essay
  • One electronic copy of the application form
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status (i.e. scanned copy of passport, permanent residency or citizenship card)

Evaluation Criteria:

An adjudicating committee will make the final decision concerning successful applicants based upon the following criteria:

India Canada Relationship
Critical Understanding of issue/ topic
Originalty of the essay
Presentation
