Scholar Travel Subsidy Grant 2011-2012 (CLOSED)

This travel grant assists scholars to participate in conferences and academic meetings through travel subsidies.

Value:

The Shastri Institute will provide 50% of the scholar’s total travel costs up to CAD$ 1,200. Other associated costs, such as costs related to visas, meals, per diem and accommodation are not eligible to this grant.

A total of CAD$10,000 is available for this competition to use for scholarly travel for the period from mid April – August 2012.

Eligibility:

Grants are available to Canadian scholars for travel to/and/or in India and to Indian scholars for travel to/and/or in Canada. Applicants must have been invited to participate by an academic institution and be affiliated with, or travelling to a Shastri Institute member institution. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of India or Canada.

Application Requirements:

Shastri Institute believes that higher education is one of the major drivers to bring about sustainable development. Therefore, STSG applications showing linkages between the proposed activities (regardless of the nature of conference/meetings, i.e., whether it is pure academic or developmental) and CIDA’s development priorities will be given preference. CIDA’s current priority areas are as follows:

a. Increasing food security
b. Securing the future of children and youth
c. Stimulating sustainable economic growth

In addition to those priority themes, CIDA integrated the following complementary considerations as cross-cutting themes in all its programs and policies:

a) Increasing environmental sustainability
b) Promoting equality between men and women
c) Helping to strengthen government institutions and practices

  • Curriculum Vitae . (not more than three pages).
  • Letter of invitation from the host institution/organization.
  • Proof of residency (Copy of Passport or Permanent Resident Card)

Evaluation Criteria:

An adjudicating committee will make the final decision concerning successful applicants based upon the following criteria and marking system:

  • Institution/Event (4 points)
  • Contribution to own development (4 points)
  • Contribution to CIDA’s development priorities (4 points)
  • Professional Background (2 points)

Disbursement of Funds:

The funds will be released to the scholars upon submission of the final report to the Institute following completion of their proposed visits. An individual will not be awarded another Scholar Travel Subsidy Grant until one year has passed

Application Deadline:

March 1st, 2012
All applicants will receive an acknowledgement of receipt. If you do not receive an acknowledgement of receipt one week after submission, please contact Sarah Sidane at 403 220 5553. Please note that the Institute takes no responsibility for missing applications or materials in mail, by post, electronic or via courier.

Adjudication will take place around end of March2012
Applicants will be notified with results on April 11, 2012
Travel dates shall fall within End April and August 2012

E-mail submissions of applications must arrive at the Institute’s Canada Office by 4:30 p.m. MST
Applications should be submitted for a deadline at least six weeks prior to expected date of travel. Travel must not be completed prior to the adjudication deadline.

Selection:

A bi-national Selection Committee considers applications in accordance with appropriate procedures, guidelines and conditions.

Guidelines:

A narrative report is required to submit to the Canada office program officer in the prescribed reporting format (please see the below link) within four weeks of completing the visit. The narrative report should include a brief summary of activity, specific achievements and impact of activity in forging Canada-India knowledge exchanges and partnerships as well as contributing to one or more of CIDA’s developmental priorities.
