Shastri International Youth Internship Award Program (CLOSED)

Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute is inviting applications from interested young Canadian students (undergraduate and graduate) to live and work with the rural communities in India for three months under its Youth Internship Program.

The purpose of this Youth Internship award is to encourage Canadian students gain valuable international development work experience by working with local Indian development organizations. This internship will provide a unique opportunity to young Canadians to employ their knowledge and skills in a foreign country and attain enhanced intercultural communication skills working in the context of a developing country like India.

Upon completion of their internship in India, the Canadian youths will have an:

  • Enhanced capacity to make employment-related choices;
  • Enhanced employability in Canada in international development and research organizations;
  • Improved capacity to meaningfully contribute to international development

Placement in India

The interns will be working with and or under the supervision of either of the following three development organizations in India, namely:

Potential working areas in India

Shastri along with its above Indian partner organizations seek to build the participants research capacity in various skills areas, particularly developing project/research concept paper, research methodologies and proposals, conducting participatory research/action research, workshops/meetings, group facilitations, presentations, dealing with multicultural issues, and policy advocacy, while exploring and contributing to the development of gender-sensitive and environmental friendly programs addressing the real development needs of Indian people and rural communities. Value:

The interns will be provided with actual international travel costs (a round-trip economy class air fare between Canada and India, including travel-health insurance and Indian visa fee), and a monthly stipend as per the policy of the Institute. Mentoring and cultural awareness training will be provided.

Duration:

Three (3) months (June-August or September-November 2011)

Eligibility:

  • Citizens or permanent residents of Canada
  • Students registered in the last two years of undergraduate study or graduate (masters, doctoral) study at a Canadian University during the 2010-11 academic year
  • Students registered in International Development, Development Studies, Non-Profit Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work, Community Development, Gender Studies, Environmental Science and Economics programs.
  • Have not participated in an internship in India with Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute.

Application Requirements:

  • A completed application form
  • One copy of official transcripts of all post-secondary studies in a sealed envelope
  • One copy of proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status (copy of passport, birth certificate or permanent residency card)
  • Two letters of reference in sealed envelopes with the referees initials on the seal. At least one reference must be from an academic instructor. Please provide the referee guidelines to your references.

Evaluation Criteria:

An adjudicating committee will review the applications and determine the successful applications based upon the following marking system:

  1. Relevance of program of study (10 points)
    • Relevance of applicant’s area of study/academic background with required subject areas (as mentioned above).
  2. Interest in international development and in India (5 points)
    • Expression of genuine interest in international development and in developing countries, especially on India. 

  3. Determination to live and work in a rural set up in India (5 points)
    • Demonstration of willingness to live, respect and adjust in a different culture-country and work with rural communities in India.
  4. Public relation skills (5 points)
    • Experience on public speaking, preparing /delivering presentations for diverse audiences.
