Shastri Pro-Development Initiative Grant (PDIG) Project 2011-12 (CLOSED)

The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute is pleased to invite applications from its Canadian and Indian member Institutions for the Pro-Development Initiative Grant (PDIG) project. The objective of the PDIG project is two fold:

1) to reinforce the Institute’s support to the development priorities concerning India
2) to encourage and support the member institutions making a bridge between international development priorities and their academic interests.

Grants to a maximum of $10,000 CAD will be available for each PDIG project initiative, to be completed within three months (January – March 2012). The potential project proposals submitted to the Institute for this grant may concentrate on completing the initial phase of the project within the above timeline. However, the proposals should describe the “bigger picture” of the project in terms of its medium term (at least) and long term (if possible) plans including expected outcomes.

The proposed PDIG projects may be built upon one or more of the following areas:

1. Bi-national partnership development initiatives with Institutions
2. Initiation of bi-national research project
3. Development initiatives engaging member institutions and development partner organization/s
4. Student Development initiatives/opportunities (exchanges, exposure trip, etc)

PDIG is made possible by the funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Endorsing CIDA’s international development mandate, successful PDIG projects must have the potential to improve issues concerning Governance, Health, Education, Environmental Sustainability, Private Sector Development and Gender Equality in India, while promoting one of CIDA’s three priority themes: a) Increasing Food Security; b) Securing the future of Children and Youth and c) Stimulating sustainable economic growth.

Value:

Up to $10,000 CAD (one project per participating institution)

Number of Awards:

6-10 (number of grants will depend on the volume of funding requests received)

Duration:

3 months (January-March 2012)
The initial phase of the project will have to be completed within three months.

Eligibility:

  • Canadian and Indian member institutions are eligible to apply for this grant. They may submit only one application. The lead applicant will have to be a member institution and the other co-applicant can be either an academic or development partner organization from India or Canada.
  • Proposed PDIG projects may build upon any of the four areas mentioned above. However, the expected project outcomes must demonstrate a well-built linkage to the promotion of one or more of CIDA’s developmental themes and priorities as outlined above.
  • PDIG projects built upon areas number 1, 2 and 4 must involve bi-national partner/s.
  • PDIG projects built upon area number 3 may engage either bi-national or local partners (non-governmental development organizations -NGO).

Eligible Project Expenses

  • International and local travel
  • Accommodation and related costs
  • Salary or stipends for student research assistants
  • Cost of equipment and supplies
  • Rental of equipment
  • Communication
  • Copying or printing costs
  • Organizational support costs
  • Translation costs
  • Travel expenses may either be for Canadians going to India or for Indians coming to Canada

Please Note:

  • Eligible expenses cannot include any institutional overhead costs
  • At the end of each project, the participants will be expected to report on how they expanded the totality of the funds invested in the project and, as requested, to provide proof of expenditure.

Application Requirements:

  • A completed application form including the following information:
    1. Title and nature of the proposed project and its relevance to CIDA’s development priorities.
    2. The proposal should describe a total picture of the project in terms of its medium and long term plans including expected outcomes.
    3. Description of the project objectives and the results that can be anticipated during the proposed initial 3 months, i.e. January-March 2012.
    4. General description of the activities that will be undertaken as part of the proposed project within the above three months.
    5. A budget breakdown (summery form) showing the description of how the funds will be utilized to execute the project.
    6. Identification of the contact persons in each institution.
  • Updated resume of the lead and co-applicants (not more than 5 pages)

Evaluation Criteria:

An adjudicating committee will make the final decision concerning successful applicants based upon the clarity of the project’s objectives and anticipated outcomes; the coherence and importance of its proposed activities; its apparent likelihood of success and promises for future development; and its relevance to the development priorities identified by CIDA

Disbursement of Funds:

75% of the grant will be disbursed upon signing of the letter of agreement and 25% upon submission of the final report, due by *April 7, 2012

Application Deadline:

December 10, 2011

  • Applications must be received by the Institute’s Calgary office by 4:30 pm (MST)
  • Applications are to be submitted electronically
  • Applicants will be notified of results by end of December 2011
  • Late and incomplete applications will not be considered
