Shastri Research Student Fellowship (SRSF) 2017-18 (OPEN)

Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute is pleased to announce a call for Applications for Shastri Research Student Fellowship (SRSF) 2017-18 for doctoral students, post-doctoral scholars and students enrolled in degree programmes in recognised Indian & Canadian universities or institutions to undertake research in areas/ fields in which scholars may desire/require research experience in Canada/India. This Programme will provide an opportunity for a transformative cultural and educational experience. Scholars will get exposure in an international setting which will bring lifelong benefits to the individual trainees as well as to the institutions in which they would be affiliated. The training and exposure they will receive will also broaden their understanding of research techniques, principles, and interdisciplinary approaches and thus will expand their scholarly horizons, a necessary step in becoming a more confident researcher in any corner of the world. Such an experience will also provide invaluable insights into the nature of the bi-national academic community and may often result in lifelong friendships and a broad bi-national professional network.

In general applications from all domains of studies like Social Sciences and Humanities, Arts, Commerce & Management and STEM subjects are accepted. However, applications are encouraged in the focus areas of SICI and priority areas of MHRD, Govt. of India i.e. Food Security and Sustainable Development, Water Resource Management, Gender, Bi-lateral Trade and Investment, Energy and Environmental Sciences, Securing Future of Children and Youth, Higher Education, Agricultural Science & Technology, Teacher Education and Training, Health Sciences, Nursing, Marine Sciences and Ocean Studies is invited under this programme. The Institute in its broader ambit also includes vocational education as specified in the Xth Addendum of the MoU.

Applicant must be from member institutions of Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute from India or Canada and the affiliate or host institution must be from member institution of SICI in India or Canada. There are three categories of this fellowship:-

1. Shastri Research Student Fellowship for Doctoral Students Doctoral fellowship will be awarded to the students enrolled in Doctoral programs in India or Canada with a significant focus on India/Canada, to enable them to access relevant research material as well as conduct research in India/Canada which will subsequently help them to get their degree. For the duration of the Fellowship, the Students must be affiliated to a Canadian/Indian institution. The selected applicant or awardee is encouraged to confirm his / her travel by 31st March 2018..

Eligibility

• Doctoral students must be registered/admitted for full-time PhD in an Indian/Canadian university

• Applicant’s synopsis should have been approved by competent authority before the last date of submission of application with SICI.

• The applicant’s university/institution must be from member institutions of SICI. A list of SICI member institutions is available at the link provided here: https://www.shastriinstitute.org/member-council .

• Doctoral fellow should obtain ‘No Objection’ from his/her Institution before applying.

• Applicants should provide two reference letters of which one of the letters must be from their thesis supervisor/HoD.

• A letter of invitation/affiliation from the host faculty is must and the affiliate should be from member institution of Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute

• The applicant must be a citizen or a permanent resident of India/Canada;

• The applicant should request his/her supervisor to declare in the reference letter that synopsis of his/her thesis has been approved and also indicate the stage of research. Research at the advanced stage of submission will not be eligible for the award.

Number of Awards: 8(Eight)*

Value of Award: $ 560 per week*

Duration: The proposed/accepted period of research will be upto 6 months for doctoral students.

2. Shastri Research Student Fellowship for Post-Doctoral Students Post doctoral fellowship will be awarded to scholars from India and Canada who have been awarded a Ph.D. degree and wish to pursue further research in India/Canada. Applicants need not have an academic position. The applicants are required to apply for this fellowship within five years of being awarded the Ph. D degree. The selected applicant or awardee is encouraged to confirm his / her travel by 31st March 2018.

Eligibility

• The applicant must have a doctoral degree awarded by Indian or Canadian University/ institution

• The applicant’s university/Institution must be from member institutions of SICI. A list of SICI member institutions is available at the link provided here: http://www.shastriinstitute.org/member-council ;

• Upon doctoral degree award one can apply and applications must be made within five years of receiving a doctoral degree;

• Proof of Ph.D. completion need to be submitted along with the application form.

• A letter of invitation/affiliation from the host faculty is must and the affiliate should be from member institution of Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute.

• The applicant’s admission the Post doctoral fellowship should have been approved at the time of submitting application.

• The applicant should demonstrate proficiency in oral and written English, and should preferably be in the age group of 30-45 years.

• Those who are employed must submit Employer’s endorsement and ‘No Objection’ from head of the department/Institution/ with the application.

• The applicant must be a citizen or a permanent resident of India and Canada;

Number of Awards:3-5 *

Value of Award: $ 590 per week*

Duration: The proposed/accepted period of research will be upto 4 months for post-doctoral scholars.

3.Shastri Research Student Fellowship for Students Student fellowship will be awarded to Indian and Canadian students who have completed two years of Bachelor degree, one year or one semester of Masters or M.Phil programme at recognised Indian & Canadian universities or institutions of higher education to take up or to pursue a course (module/part of a course), or do an internship at recognised Canadian& Indian universities. The proposed study/course module must be relevant to the study for which scholar is currently enrolled in his institution of registration. The selected applicant or awardee is encouraged to avail his /her travel by 31st March 2018

Eligibility:

• An applicant should have completed two year of Bachelor degree and minimum of one semester or 6 months of Masters from an Indian or Canadian University/ Institution with at least 55% marks. The final year or last semester student has to provide proof for the internship required for that particular degree.

• Students pursuing M. Phil should have completed minimum of 1 semester of the degree/course.

• The applicant’s University/Institution must be from member institutions of Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. A list of SICI member institutions is available at the link provided here: http://www.shastriinstitute.org/member-council ;

• The applicant should not have another degree from a Canadian university or be enrolled in a Canadian degree program.

• A letter of invitation/affiliation from the host faculty is must and the affiliate should be from member institution of Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute.

• The applicant must be a citizen or a permanent resident of India/Canada

• Official Transcripts (student applicants only) to be sent directly from the university for all years of completed study.

• The applicant should demonstrate proficiency in oral and written English, and should preferably be in the age group of 21-25 years.

Number of Awards: 9(Nine)*

Value of Award: $ 500 per week*

Duration: The proposed/accepted period of research will be up to 8-12 weeks for students.

Fellowship package

The fellowship package will cover-

1. Economy class airfare from the place of origin to the place of affiliation in the most direct route,
2. Visa /Compliance fee,
3. Overseas insurance.
4. Research allowance ( applicable to doctoral candidates only)

Application Requirements:

• Completed electronic application along with all required documents should be submitted to http://shastriinstitute.org/gms/ on or before 31st December 2017 by 5:00pm (IST) .
• Late and incomplete applications will not be entertained.

• In case the applicant is employed then Employer’s endorsement is must for application submission and has to submit ‘No Objection’ from head of the department/Institution with the application.

• Paper copy of application should be duly signed/sealed forwarded by the respective Department/ Centre/ School through competent authority.

Disbursement of Funds:

The stipend will be disbursed in two equal installments. The first installment will be released upon signing of letter of agreement between SICI and recipient’s institution closer to the awardee’s journey to Canada or India. The 2nd installment of stipend will be released upon submission of mid-term progress report. The remaining 10% of the award money will be released upon submission and approval of a final report to SICI by the recipient.
