Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute
Student Excellence Awards
The purpose of this award is to assist undergraduate and graduate students further their study of India and prepare them for a career in an India related field. Awards will be provided to students with high academic achievements who can clearly demonstrate how the award will contribute to their knowledge of India and how this knowledge will contribute to their long-term career goals. Eligible disciplines include Indian culture, history, religion, arts, social and economic development and the human dimension of science and technology.
Value:
$2,000
Five awards will be distributed in 2011. Two awards will be distributed to undergraduates and three awards will be distributed to graduate students.
Eligibility:
- Citizens or permanent residents of Canada
- Students registered in the last two years of undergraduate study or graduate (masters, doctoral) study at a Canadian University during the 2010-2011 academic year
- Students registered in a programme with a substantial India Studies component
Application Requirements:
- A completed application form
- One copy of official transcripts of all post-secondary studies in a sealed envelope
- One copy of proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status (copy of passport, birth certificate or permanent residency card)
- Two letters of reference in sealed envelopes with the referees initials on the seal. At least one reference must be from an academic instructor. Please provide the referee guidelines to your references.

Evaluation Criteria:
An adjudicating committee will review the applications and determine the successful applications based upon the following marking system:
- Academic excellence (10 points)
- Does the applicant clearly demonstrate that they work hard and take their studies seriously?
- Relevance of program of study (10 points)
- Does the applicant’s area of study have clear relevance to India?
- Planned use of the grant (20 points)
- Does the applicant clearly demonstrate that they will use the grant funds to further their study of India and a career related to India?

Grant recipients are to submit a report by December 31, 2011 describing how their studies, research, or overall experience has increased their knowledge and expertise on India and assisted in their career and/or personal growth.
